“If you’re not watching Rize, you’re not watching wrestling.

“Rize Wrestling, promo number two.”

A drumbeat thumps as text appears on the screen.

KING.

The letters fade away, and the picture focuses on a well-worn sneaker. The camera pans up, up, up to reveal King’s face. He holds the mic and looks directly at the camera, unflinching. He makes a motion off-screen, and the music fades away. He takes a moment before he begins to speak.

“They say that Brooklyn is the hottest place to live,

not outta the five boroughs, not outta the state, not outta the country,

nah,

they say that Brooklyn is the hottest place to live in the whole entire WORLD!”

He holds his arms up for a moment as the tinny sound of a crowd roars. The crowd cuts off suddenly as he puts the mic back to his mouth and says,

“And I say, yeah. I know.

“I know that Brooklyn is the greatest place to live in the entire world, in the universe, but you really wanna know why that is?”

He puts a hand up to his ear, pretending to listen.

“Well, it’s not because Brooklyn is full’a cute little fancy coffee shops.

“It’s not because Brooklyn has commissioned artsy walls or because it’s a hot place for artists to come to make a name for themselves.

“It’s because Brooklyn is made of the people who live here, who have lived here, who are here, it’s because we been here!

“This is a county for Kings, baby! And I’m the King!

“All hail the King!”

The fake crowd sound comes on again, louder than before.

“And I got a message for the Incredible Lexi. Lexi, I know you think that belt is yours, and I’m sorry to disappoint you, but…”

He raises the Rize belt and shows it to the camera; he’s written his name on it.

“As you can see, it’s actually got my name written all over it. You wanna take it back? I’ll see you in the ring.” He almost drops the mic but stops himself, puts it back up to his mouth, and says, “Here, live on the playground, July eighth, one o’clock Eastern Standard Time. See you there.”
